SENATE PASSES CRIMINAL REFORM BILL The Senate passed a package of justice reforms that could reduce the U.S. prison population — currently the largest in the world. Titled the First Step Act, the bill will reduce prison sentences for some federal inmates by creating a new assessment program that would grant earlier release to those unlikely to commit future crimes. The legislation now heads back to the House before landing on the president's desk. [HuffPost]
