Your Wednesday Evening Briefing

Good evening. Here's the start of tonight's briefing.

1. France said "a new team of terrorists" that was ready to act had been neutralized in a gun battle on the outskirts of Paris that was so fierce the building had to be shored up to prevent collapse. Eight people were arrested and at least two were killed, including a woman who detonated an explosive vest. The authorities said they were not sure if the suspected architect of Friday's devastating attacks — the initial target of the raid — had also been killed.

2. The Islamic State published a photo in its online magazine purporting to show the bomb that brought down a Russian passenger jet on Oct. 31, killing 224 people. The claim could not be verified. An accompanying article said the bombing was punishment for Russia's airstrikes in Syria — though most spared the Islamic State. The article also boasted about the attacks in France, praising the "brave knights" who "brought Paris down on its knees."
