Giuliani fires up convention with boisterous speech
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani got some of the loudest cheers at the opening night of the Republican convention with an emphatic speech touching on violence against police, terrorism and Benghazi. "We say thank you to the Cleveland Police Department for protecting us," Giuliani said, prompting the first of several standing ovations during his speech. The ovations included audience chants of "Ru-dy! Ru-dy!"

Trump surges among independent voters
Donald Trump has found new support from independent voters, which allowed him to close the gap in a new nationwide poll. According to a Monmouth University poll released Monday, Trump leads Hillary Clinton 40-31 among independents, a 9-point lead just a month after the same poll said the two candidates were tied among those voters.

Airport strike looms for Dem convention
Democrats attending their party's national convention in Philadelphia next week may find their travel plans getting a bit complicated. Workers at Philadelphia International Airport have voted to strike during the convention and are holding a rally Tuesday to demonstrate that they are willing to walk off. That could be awkward for any out-of-town delegates who plan to use the airport since the party strongly supports labor unions.

Anti-RNC protesters were spotted leaping barricades and chanting, "Whose street? Our street!" In a different location, Trump ally Roger Stone's "Days of Rage" morphed into a jubilant "America First" rally celebrating Trump's rise to becoming the presumptive GOP nominee.

'Back the Blue' act introduced to protect federal officers
Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, has introduced a bill that would increase federal penalties against people who either kill, assault or plan violence against a law enforcement officer. Poe's Back the Blue Act is a response to the recent shootings against police. Five police officers in Dallas were shot and killed earlier this month, and on Sunday, three more officers in Baton Rouge, La., were killed.
