Your Thursday Evening Briefing
By ANDREA KANNAPELL AND SANDRA STEVENSON

1. Senate Democrats handed President Obama a major victory, blocking a Republican vote against the Iran nuclear deal and ensuring that there would be no veto showdown between Congress and the White House. 2. It's not every day that the human family tree adds a branch. Scientists announced the discovery of Homo naledi, a new species dating back 2.5 million years or more. A large cache of bones found in a South African cave suggests that the group ritually protected its dead, a behavior previously thought limited to modern humans.
3. President Obama opened America's doors to 10,000 Syrian refugees over the next year, a move of political significance despite the modest number. Many times that number of migrants streamed through Europe, meeting rain, more misery and mixed welcomes.
