Workers Complete Demolition at Historic Los Alamos Site

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. – A team lead by the Environmental Management Los Alamos Field Office recently completed demolition of a building at a historic Los Alamos site.

   Known as 21-286, the building was a former radiologically contaminated warehouse at Technical Area 21 (TA-21), one of the early sites of Manhattan Project and Cold War work conducted at Los Alamos National Laboratory. TA-21 was the location of the world's first plutonium processing facility and where groundbreaking tritium research took place.

   The demolition of 21-286 is a key milestone in the ongoing work being performed at TA-21. The project resulted in an overall footprint reduction of 3,310 square feet.

   "We are committed to the cleanup of TA-21 and the eventual transfer of the land to Los Alamos County. I look forward to contributing to the safe execution of the EM mission," said Doug Hintze, the new Environmental Management Los Alamos Field Office manager. 

   The scope of the project included extensive building characterization prior to demolition to properly identify hazards. Following characterization, appropriate controls were implemented to protect workers and the public.
