What you can do to be happier right now

On my blog, I post daily about my adventures in happiness and good habits, as I test-drive the wisdom of the ages, the current scientific studies, and tips from popular culture. In this newsletter, I highlight some of the best material from the previous month.

Happy spring! (If it's spring in your part of the world.)

This month, I've continued to do book events for Better Than Before, which is a lot of fun. One highlight: I got to speak to a gathering of librarians. I love libraries and librarians.

For my sister Elizabeth and me, having a podcast is getting more fun all the time. We've only been doing Happier with Gretchen Rubin for a few months, and we're closing in on a million downloads. Zoikes.

Thanks to everyone who tunes in -- and special thanks to those of you who have rated, reviewed, and subscribed. For a new podcast like ours, those actions by listeners really give a boost. It's a particularly big help to us if you subscribe. Not sure how to subscribe? It's easy, really! Instructions here.

And on the subject of blatant self-promotion...Father's Day is coming up. If you're looking for a good gift for a father in your life (or for yourself), may I suggest Better Than Before? Most of us have habits that we want to make or break, and Better Than Before explains how to do that. Really!

If you'd like a signed bookplate to make the book more special, request it here (U.S. and Canada only, sorry, mailing costs). But request that soon, because I can be a little slow. Want more info? Excerpt here. Audio clip here. Discussion guides here. Not sure what a bookplate is? See below:

Hot Topic of the Month

Many readers responded to the question, inspired by a family visit to the circus, Have you ever felt a "call" to do a certain kind of work? I have felt a call, myself. A mysterious thing.

Hot on Facebook

I posted an image of my Secret of Adulthood, "Outer order contributes to inner calm" and asked "Agree, disagree?" Many people responded.
The post "I'm thrilled to be included in this list--in such good company! Yowza" also got a lot of buzz. I linked to "Mashable's 25 must-read books to dive into this summer."

Ep. 14: Cultivate a shrine, know what's different about you, and fight "hostess neurosis."
Ep. 13: Why you should stop reading a book, a know-yourself-better quiz, and the trap of free stuff. A surprising number of people weighed in to talk about whether or not they quit reading a boring book.
Ep. 12: Indulge in a modest splurge, Tiggers vs. Eeyores, road rage, and April Fool's Day pranks.
Ep. 11: Make the positive argument, simplicity vs. abundance, and the challenge of sunscreen. Thanks to everyone who contacted us with sunscreen recommendations.
