Good evening. Here's the start of tonight's briefing. 
1. Kurdish-led forces began a major assault on the Islamic State near the town of Sinjar in Iraq, rapidly capturing a highway that served as a crucial jihadi supply line. But internal frictions divided the attacking forces, with government pesh merga units fighting separately from Syrian Kurdish fighters and the two groups likely to vie for control of the area if it is liberated.
2. A Cleveland surgical team expects to be the first in the United States to transplant a uterus, aiming to help women who were born without or whose organs were damaged or removed. Despite the risks of surgery and anti-rejection drugs, eight women have already volunteered for screening. "I want the morning sickness, the backaches, the feet swelling," one said. "I want to feel the baby move."
