Your Friday Evening Briefing
By ANDREA KANNAPELL AND SANDRA STEVENSON
Good evening. Here's the start of tonight's briefing.
1. The Republican candidates zipped around South Carolina, where the race has narrowed heading into Saturday's primary. A new poll showed Donald Trump down to just a five-point lead on Ted Cruz, followed by a rising Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush, who campaigned with his mother, Barbara. The Democratic candidates focused on Saturday's caucuses in Nevada, where Bernie Sanders now represents a real threat to Hillary Clinton's once-formidable advantage. Should they tie, party officials offered a solution fitting for a state with billions of dollars in annual gaming revenue. The campaigns each draw once from a deck of cards. High card wins.
2. Readers and movie lovers paused to mourn the loss of Harper Lee. The author of the beloved novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" and its recently published, controversial sequel, "Go Set a Watchman," she also helped Truman Capote with his true-crime novel "In Cold Blood." "All I want to be," she once told an interviewer, "is the Jane Austen of South Alabama."
