Welcome to The Lid, your afternoon dose of the 2016 ethos… We have a brand-new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll out today, which is exciting except for the fact that we're too late to modify our approval rating categories to "strongly disapprove," "disapprove," "approve" and "OMG I LOVE THIS AS MUCH AS I LOVE THE CHEWBACCA MASK VIDEO LOL!"
The Lid: 2016 Could Be The Haters Election
Mon, 23 May 2016 21:38:00 GMT

From NBC's Carrie Dann and Andrew Rafferty

Sometimes, a poll tells you something you already instinctively kind of know, but the numbers really drive it home. That was the case for us with this piece of data in our NBC News/ Wall Street Journal poll: Majorities of both Trump and Clinton voters say their vote in November is more about opposing the OTHER candidate than about supporting their nominee. Among those who say they're supporting Hillary Clinton, 44 percent said their vote is more about supporting former Secretary of State, while 52 percent said their vote is more about opposing Donald Trump. Among Trump voters, it's a similar picture: 42 percent are voting *for* Trump, while 54 percent are voting *against* Clinton. With sky-high negatives for both of these candidates, we've known all along that this election was going to be more about voters hating the other team than loving their own, but bookmark these numbers if you need a reminder of why things are so ugly in the heat of the summer.
