Terrorist kills 50 at gay nightclub in Orlando
Fifty people were killed inside an Orlando gay nightclub early Sunday morning in the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. Officials are describing the attack as a possible case of terrorism. The shooting started around 2 a.m. at the club, known as Pulse, and the gunman was shot and killed by police. About 53 people were taken to area hospitals, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Obama: It's the gun's fault
President Obama on Sunday used the tragic mass shooting in Orlando to call for gun-control measures. "This massacre is a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon to shoot people in a school, or a house of worship, or a movie theater or a nightclub," he said during remarks early Sunday afternoon at the White House. Obama did not mention Islam or the Islamic State, to which the shooter pledged allegiance.

ACLU lawyer: It's the Christian Right's fault
Christian conservatives are responsible for the mass shooting at a gay bar in Orlando because they "created this anti-queer climate," according to American Civil Liberties Union attorneys. "You know what is gross - your thoughts and prayers and Islamophobia after you created this anti-queer climate," ACLU staff attorney Chase Strangio tweeted on Sunday morning. At least 50 people were killed last night by Omar Mateen, a U.S. citizen born to Afghan parents suspected to have "leanings toward extreme Islamic ideologies." The FBI is investigating the attack as a "domestic terror incident."

Graham: Why so hard to tell the truth about Orlando?
President Obama left out the words "Islam" and "Muslim" entirely from his remarks to the nation after the Islamic State-inspired attack on a gay nightclub. This is akin to a speech following a Ku Klux Klan attack on a black church that fails to mention race. This play-dumb form of political correctness doesn't help, doesn't spare anyone from taking offense, and probably disserves the majority of Muslims whose comrades are fighting against and dying because of radicalism. On top of that, it helps Donald Trump maintain the perception that he's the only one willing to tell the truth about a major problem America faces today.

Trump reaffirms support for Muslim ban
Donald Trump doubled down on calling for a ban on Muslims entering the U.S., attacking Hillary Clinton for welcoming migrants from Middle Eastern countries if she becomes president. Trump also said in a statement Sunday that if Clinton refuses to say the words "radical Islam" then "she should get out of the race for the Presidency." Trump has previously called for a ban on all Muslims entering the U.S., a policy that has earned condemnation from many in both parties.

| On this day fifty years ago, the Supreme Court's Miranda ruling was handed down, giving rise to the famous phrase which is now ubiquitous in all cop dramas: "You have the right to remain silent...." The ruling required that suspects be specifically warned upon arrest about their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and their right to legal counsel. The decision has both bolstered suspects' due process rights and made it much more difficult for police to extract confessions. Ernesto Miranda, the suspect in the case, was convicted anyway of the kidnapping and rape of which he had been accused after his confession was excluded from trial. He served only five years in prison. He died in 1976 when he was stabbed in a bar fight. The suspect in his murder was arrested, but exercised his right to remain silent and was released for lack of evidence. |

Islamic State claims responsibility for Orlando shooting
The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. AMAQ, a news organization tied to the Islamic State, attributed the attack to an Islamic State fighter, according to Reuters. "The armed attack that targeted a gay nightclub in the city of Orlando in the American state of Florida which left over 100 people dead or injured was carried out by an Islamic State fighter," AMAQ said.

Santa Monica law enforcement officials arrested a man armed with weapons and explosive material who said he was in California for the Los Angeles Pride Festival. "They found him with weapons that were very disconcerting," a source told the Los Angeles Times. Those weapons included guns and ammunition, "as well as tannerite, an ingredient that could be used to create a pipe bomb," according to the report.
